Greetings in the name of the Lord!
In the new year, it is good to look at
what lies before us in the household of faith. And what lies ahead of
us in the world and the culture we are to engaged. Has the church in
its effort to reached out become sucked into the practice and culture
and itd practices become so secularised that it is difficult to
discern the chirch from a cultural organisation.
Should we not take stock of our
position and examine very closely the purity of our heart before God
and once again examine closely the motive behind our activities to
see whether it is grounded in the commandments of the work and most
importantly to see whether the end is rightly placed for the purpose
of glorifying our God
The Church
In each generation, the church is to
uphold and proclaim the Truth as is is delivered to her her by her
Lord. It is to support and be the pillar of Truth for generation to
come. We as partakers are to 'contend earnestly for the faith which
was once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 3)
So what is the state of the chuch
today?
The church in its zeal to reach out has
adopted the approach used by the market of consumerism and selling
Christ like a product as thereby robbing God of its severeignty and
holiness. It is working out to meet the felt-needs of man rather than
proclaiming what God feels they needs. It is promoting entertainment
and experience rather than conviction and repentance. Sermons are
highly emotionally charged with spiritually drawing attention to man
rather than sermons solemnly preached centred on His Words,
worshipping and glorifying Him. This process of entrapment of sinners
in the name of God is going on far too long
The most successful arm of the
evangelical church in recent years, in terms of growth, money and
prestige, has been the market-driven (seeker-sensitive, new paradigm,
user-friendly) church. Because of this success these churches are
being mimicked all over the country, and indeed, the world. But is
this church fully dressed? Is she outfitted in the biblically
prescribed robes of evangelism, edification, worship and instruction?
Or, is she wrapped in rags composed of empty human philosophy
stitched together with bits and pieces of truth? If the latter is
true, why have so few seemed to notice? It is the intent of this book
to attempt to answer some of these questions.
Let us be more aware of the church
landscape its evolution and how it has been impacted by cultural
change to better positioned ourself to maintain truthful to the
revelations and plan and purpose of God, the teachings of the apostle
and the history of the church tradition.
Gilley contends that the church has
indeed lost the war, so much so that the influence of culture have
become influences in the church. The moat important of which are
entertainment, market driven philosophies and psychology. These three
are largely absent from the bible, yet are startlingly present in
evangelical churches.
This book is a serious and timely call
for churches to return to the scriptural roots.... before it is too
late....
